Heather Maggs, senior national speaker of “Girls Fight Back,” will teach and demonstrate safety and self-defense for interested women Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Union Ballroom.

Sponsored by the UW Panhellenic Council, the event will be informational as well as interactive, as audience members will be given an opportunity to practice some of the learned techniques. It is free and open to women of all ages.

Panhellenic Council President Lauren Robertson says the free event will help women on campus.

“At the University of Wyoming, there aren’t many self-defense classes for women,” Robertson says. “As a woman, I believe it is important to know how to defend yourself in any situation.”

Girls Fight Back is an organization founded by Erin Weed, whose close friend Shannon McNamara was murdered in 2001. McNamara’s death inspired Weed to create the organization that teaches and trains women of any age how to be safe and defend themselves.
