University of Wyoming students have a new pregame activity for home football games, thanks in part to new UW President Bob Sternberg.

The university president traditionally has hosted an invitation-only tailgate party outside War Memorial Stadium, but Sternberg has opted to discontinue the practice. Funding budgeted for those exclusive events instead is being directed to tailgate activities for all UW students, starting with Saturday’s game against Idaho.

The change also will allow Sternberg and his family to participate with the public in regular Tailgate Park activities.

The first Wild Bunch Tailgate for UW students is scheduled from noon to 1:45 p.m. Saturday near Gate 3 of War Memorial Stadium in the grassy area south of the venue. The event will feature Pepsi products, a pig roast, live music by Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band, games, activities and giveaways, all free of charge. The game begins at 2 p.m.

The Wild Bunch is an athletic-support group composed of UW students.

Meanwhile, the regular public pregame activities will take place in Tailgate Park, at the southwest end of the stadium.

“So that my family and I can be more involved in the pregame experience in Tailgate Park, I won’t be hosting an exclusive president’s tailgate event this year,” Sternberg says. “You’ll find the Sternbergs in Tailgate Park on football Saturdays this year, and I look forward to seeing you there.”
