An exhibition by Seattle-based artist John Grade has opened at the University of Wyoming Art Museum.

“Middle Fork” continues the artist’s exploration of irrevocable change and natural deterioration in a new installation created from the casting of a 100-foot-tall, live, old-growth tree. The form of the tree has been assembled from thousands of small, perforated cedar pieces and is suspended horizontally in the gallery.

From its 10-foot-diameter trunk, 12- to 15-foot limbs fork from the trunk, offering a new perspective about trees, their relationship to humans and the relationship of the sculpture to its original source in the landscape. “Middle Fork” also includes additional smaller works by Grade.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Western Cast Iron Art Conference Sept. 24-28 in Laramie, for which Grade is the keynote speaker. Hosted by the UW Art Department, the conference will feature iron pours, workshops, demonstrations and lectures.

A reception for grade will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, from 5-6 p.m. at the UW Art Museum followed by a public art talk at 6:30 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building lobby. He also will present a gallery walk-through of the exhibition on Friday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

For more information, call the Art Museum at (307) 766-6622 or visit the website at www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum, or follow on Facebook and Instagram.
