Roll Call Event at UW on Veterans Day to Honor Fallen Soldiers

October 29, 2014

Volunteers are needed to read the names of military veterans who have died serving their country during a Veterans Day event Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the University of Wyoming.

The UW Veterans Services Center (VSC) will host its annual national roll call program, joining campuses from across the country in similar events on Veterans Day. The presentation of the colors and the playing of the national anthem begin the ceremony at 8 a.m. at Simpson Plaza, followed by the reading of the names of the deceased.

A moment of silence is scheduled at noon, followed by remarks about the event. The playing of taps and the retiring of the colors will end the program. Last year’s event concluded at 6 p.m.

“The UW Veterans Services Center will once again participate in the national roll call remembering the men and women of America’s armed forces who have valiantly and selflessly served and defended our great nation,” says Marty Martinez, UW VSC project coordinator. “We ask for volunteers from our campus and local community to help us in reading of the names of more than 7,000 military members lost in operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.”

Volunteers are need to read approximately 125 names, with each time block expected to last approximately 15 minutes. A specific time block may be requested, and anyone is welcome to read during multiple time blocks.

To volunteer, email the following information to name, department, phone, email and a preferred time to read. If there is no time preference, one will be assigned.
