University of Wyoming Libraries is leveraging open access publishing through UW’s new Wyoming Scholars Repository (WySR) to host professional peer-reviewed journals.

The Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra (ELA), a publication of the International Linear Algebra Society, is the first journal addition to WySR. It is available online at http://repository.uwyo.edu/ela/.

ELA is a refereed all-electronic journal that welcomes mathematical articles of high standards that contribute new information and new insights to matrix analysis and the various aspects of linear algebra and its applications. Editor-in-Chief Bryan Shader is professor of mathematics and special assistant to the vice president of research at UW.

“An advantage of working alongside UW Libraries in hosting ELA journal is the ability to keep up on the cutting edge of the evolution of scholarly communication,” Shader says.

A service of UW Libraries, WySR is dedicated to preserving and providing open access to the scholarly and creative works of the university community. Coordinated by Scholarly Communication Librarian Kelly Visnak, WySR provides UW faculty, researchers and editors the opportunity to publish, manage and promote their scholarly works.

The American Association of University Presses notes that hosting a journal such as ELA benefits UW by extending the university’s reach and influence, and by making evident its commitment to knowledge, ideas and innovation.

ELA’s journal is supported through the peer-review and publishing tools of UW Libraries’ digital commons institutional repository platform. WySR publishing tools aid in managing the editorial workflow by tracking articles. This includes tracking of referee activity and automatic PDF conversion -- and by managing the correspondence to all editors, authors and reviewers.

“Bryan Shader’s experience as an editor of ELA has provided a wonderful proof-of-concept opportunity for UW Libraries as we begin to offer open-access publishing opportunities for our scholarly community,” Visnak says. “Through WySR, UW Libraries aims to increase the visibility of UW’s scholarship, encourage collaboration and innovation and contribute to the ongoing development of new knowledge.”
