UW Celebrates Geography Awareness Week

Activities ranging from a geography bowl to GIS workshops and discussions about pollination and brewing are scheduled during Geography Awareness Week Nov. 17-21 at the University of Wyoming.

“Geography and the Future of Food” is the theme of the observance, sponsored by the UW Geography Club. The National Geographic’s giant map of North America will be displayed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 20-21, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Ballroom.

The event’s schedule:

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 5 p.m. -- Panel discussion on “Laramie Local Food,” Berry Center auditorium; 7 p.m., Geography Bowl, Wyoming Union Ballroom, prizes and refreshments offered. For more information, email uwyogeogclub@gmail.com.

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2-4 p.m. -- GIS Day mini workshops: 2 p.m., “Introduction to Free and Open Source GIS and QGIS”; 2:30 p.m., “Using ArcGIS online”; 3 p.m., “Wyoming’s New Geospatial Hub”; and 3:30 p.m., “Update on Landsat-derived data available from the USGS.”

Thursday, Nov. 20, 5 p.m. -- Graduate researcher Sarah DePaolo discusses “The Buzz on Pollinator Diversity: How Native Bees can Support the Struggling Honey Bee,” Berry Center auditorium.

Friday, Nov. 21, 5 p.m. -- Local brewer Jared Long discusses “The Portrait of a Spatially Aware Brewer,” Berry Center auditorium.
