Winter Driving Hints Offered

November 24, 2014

With many faculty, staff and students on the road this week for Thanksgiving, the University of Wyoming Risk Management and Safety Office offers some reminders to ensure safe driving during the holiday season.

“Defensive driving is especially important in the winter when roads are slick,” according to a UW safety bulletin. “Make a plan or strategy in advance to achieve the ultimate goal (getting where you need to go without mishap).”

Such advance planning should include the following:

-- Monitor the weather forecasts daily.

-- Prepare your vehicle for winter driving, including good wipers, battery and snow tires.

-- Dress for the cold including coat, hat and boots.

-- Drive more slowly and become more vigilant.

-- Slow down and look twice -- and buckle up!

The Wyoming Department of Transportation offers a number of services, including road reports and webcam images, to assist winter travelers. Visit WyDOT’s Travel Information Service at www.wyoroad.info, call 511, or 1-888-WYO-ROAD.
