College Advising Corps Helps Students Pursue Higher Education

February 10, 2015

Nearly 400 Wyoming high school seniors received encouragement and help to apply for post-high school education in late 2014 during events at seven high schools sponsored by the Wyoming College Advising Corps (WyCAC).

WyCAC, which has placed 10 college access advisers in high schools throughout the state, is an initiative funded through the Wyoming College Access Challenge Grant and is administered by the University of Wyoming’s Department of Student Educational Opportunity in the Division of Student Affairs.

WyCAC held inaugural College Application Events during November at Kemmerer, Evanston, Powell, Rawlins, Sheridan, Cheyenne East and Riverton high schools as well as the Shoshone Learning Center in Powell. With almost 400 students participating, the events resulted in 276 applications submitted to post-secondary institutions in Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Nebraska, Washington, Illinois, Arizona, California and South Dakota.

Presentations to juniors, seniors and parents and families included the benefits of earning a post-secondary degree, picking the right college, the costs of college, and how to pay for college. Teachers and counselors in participating schools also talked about the benefits of a college education and their experiences in college as a means to encourage students to prepare for and enter college.

To encourage a strong turnout, many WyCAC advisers provided community-donated prizes for students participating in the events, as well as snacks and drinks.
