Kyle Bochanski, a microbiology/Environment and Natural Resources Program major from Fairfax, Vt., was among the seven finalists for the 2015 Tobin Memorial Award as the University of Wyoming’s (UW) outstanding graduating man.

Cheyenne’s Joshua Messer was the recipient for this year’s Tobin Memorial Award. Callie Berman, of Boulder, Colo., received the Rosemarie Martha Spitaleri Award as UW's outstanding graduating woman.

The annual Tobin award is based on academic excellence and achievement, service to the university, participation and leadership in the community and campus activities, and citizenship qualities. Other finalists were Christian Bopp, Waikoloa, Hawaii; Stanley DeVore, Casper; Andy Kulikowski, Atascadero, Calif.; Mathias McCormick, Laramie; and Jose Rivas, Gillette. Students were honored at a recent luncheon.

To be considered for the Spitaleri and Tobin awards, students were judged on academic excellence and achievement; contributions and service to UW; participation and leadership in co-curricular activities; and demonstrated character and citizenship.

“When I reflect on my time here, I can only wonder at how I ended up with so many opportunities. The university put forth a hand and I took it. The only success I will claim is being smart enough to accept,” Bochanski says. “When I think of what highlights my scholarship, leadership and contributions to the University of Wyoming, it is the sincere care of those who have been a part of my life here. For that, I am deeply grateful.”

Nominators wrote letters of support for each of the students.

“Genial, focused, always communicative and prompt, curious, independently motivated, just a little bit goofy, and an excellent team player: Any of these qualities alone would make for a stand-out student, and he embodies them all,” wrote one nominator. “Among that phenomenal pool, Kyle Bochanski stands out in all the best ways. Kyle exemplifies the type of student who makes this university special.  He is an incredible student, a dependable leader, a fantastic athlete and a truly special person.”

He was a member of the UW Nordic Ski Club this past season that won the United States Collegiate Ski Association national championship.
