Wyoming High School Students Receive Daniels Fund Scholarships

May 28, 2015

Wyoming high school students participating in two University of Wyoming college preparatory programs are the recipients of Daniels Fund Scholarships, a competitive award that covers full college costs not met through other types of financial aid.

The Daniels Fund awards scholarships to promising students from limited-income families who “demonstrate strength of character, a well-rounded personality and a record of accomplishment in giving back to the community.”

Of the 24 Wyoming high school seniors who received awards from the Daniels Fund Scholarship Program, 12 are participants in UW student services programs that include GEAR UP Wyoming and Upward Bound/Upward Bound Math Science. The programs are federally funded through the United States Department of Education and serve families throughout Wyoming, with the goal of assisting eligible middle school and high school students to successfully prepare for and succeed in college.

GEAR UP students receiving scholarships are: Christopher Hugh Bruce, Cheyenne East High School; Ciara Ronelle Blain, Joshua David Walmsley and Timothy Robert Uttenhove, all from Douglas High School; Kyla Rae Christensen, Kaycee School; Ashley Marie Dillon, Powell High School; Allison Elizabeth Emery, Torrington High School; Caleb Monroe Flake, Mountain View High School; William Brooks Van Buren, Campbell County High School; Evan Michael Wilhelm, Glendo High School; and Jacob David Zaragoza, Evanston High School.

Cole Garret Moncur, Lovell High School, who also was awarded a scholarship, participates in both GEAR UP Wyoming and Upward Bound/Upward Bound Math Science.

GEAR UP Wyoming (www.uwyo.edu/gearup) is an educational assistance program that prepares income-eligible Wyoming students for success in higher education. The program is funded 50 percent through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education totaling $3.5 million annually with an additional $3.5 million provided by in-kind and scholarship contributions from UW, Wyoming’s community colleges and the Wyoming Department of Education.

The UW Upward Bound/Upward Bound Math Science programs (www.uwyo.edu/seo/upward-bound) also are federally funded programs serving Wyoming high school students who are limited-income and potential first-generation college students. The programs provide academic, social, cultural and career enrichments that prepare students to succeed in higher education.
