A serial entrepreneur who has launched start-ups in real estate, specialty finance and technology will be the guest speaker of e2e Wyoming’s meeting in Laramie next month.

Doug Henston, who is currently working in clean technology on early-stage technology platforms for water remediation, information and analytics, will speak Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the University of Wyoming’s Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center, 222 S. 22nd St., in Laramie. The title of his talk is “Thoughts on Start-ups That You Won’t Get From a Textbook.”

“The audience at e2e Wyoming will benefit from Doug’s presentation because Doug can speak about business from various perspectives. He has worked for a publicly traded company, a private company that he helped to take public, and he has transitioned to entrepreneurship,” says Joe Bennick, director of the Wyoming Technology Business Center (WTBC) for the Casper area. “Doug has broad experience in strategy and commercializing emergent platforms. Doug’s presentation will focus on his experiences in business and will impart process knowledge to entrepreneurs and people thinking about entrepreneurship.”

Previously, Henston was CEO and founder of Solix Biofuels (now Solix Biosystems), a Colorado-based company that has developed the production technology to support the development of the algae oil used to produce high, value-added biochemical and biofuels.

Before founding Solix Biofuels, Henston was a managing director at Domani LLC, a consulting firm with an international clientele and headquartered in Denver. While there, he provided strategic services for corporations regarding adoption of clean technologies and sustainable practices. He previously was president of operations at Affordable Residential Communities and was a member of the senior management team that, in 2004, took the platform public on the New York Stock Exchange.

Before moving to Colorado, he was a vice president in fixed income at Goldman Sachs and Co. from 1994-98. Henston is a U.S. Navy veteran fighter pilot and once led missions in highly visible and politically sensitive areas, including the evacuation of the American Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon.

He has served on the boards of the Colorado Bioscience Association, the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association and is currently a trustee of the Kent Denver School. Henston received his bachelor’s degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

“Doug will be a great addition to the WTBC’s e2e Wyoming series because he is a seasoned business expert who has had a wide variety of experiences to learn from,” Bennick says.

E2e is an educational networking program with chapters in Laramie, Casper, Gillette and Sheridan. It is designed to improve the climate for the start-up and growth of entrepreneurial companies. Each e2e chapter meets bimonthly for 45 minutes of networking, followed by a 45-minute program. The programs include successful entrepreneurs telling their stories, panel discussion on relevant topics and advice from experts in a specific business.

Administered by the UW Office of Research and Economic Development, the WTBC is a not-for-profit business incubator that provides entrepreneurs with the expertise, networks and tools necessary for success. The WTBC launched e2e as an educational networking program.
