The American Indian Studies Program at the University of Wyoming hosts a screening of “Winter in the Blood,” starring native actors Chaske Spencer (Lakota) and Gary Farmer (Cayuga), Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in the College of Education auditorium.
A panel discussion with Spencer and filmmakers Alex and Andrew Smith takes place after the film. The event is free and open to the public.
“Winter in the Blood,” based on the 1974 novel of the same name by James Welch (Blackfoot), was filmed in northern Montana.
Spencer is best known for his role as werewolf Sam Uley in the “Twilight” films. Farmer has appeared in many films, including “Smoke Signals” and “Powwow Highway.”
“We made this film where the novel was born, on the Hi-Line of Montana, with strong community and tribal involvement,” says filmmaker Andrew Smith. “We want our audience to know this world’s stark, giant, particular beauty.”
The American Indian Studies Program hosts the film with support from the Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowment. Created in 2006 by the Wyoming State Legislature, the endowment brings distinguished scholars and educators to UW to strengthen instruction and research in disciplines related to economic and social challenges facing Wyoming.
