Holocaust Survivor to Speak at UW

November 3, 2015

As part of the University of Wyoming Holocaust Remembrance Week Nov. 9-13, Holocaust survivor Estelle Nadel will speak Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 4 p.m. in Room 302 of the Classroom Building.

Emphasizing the importance for newer generations to learn about the Holocaust while some survivors are still alive, Nadel will share her story of struggle and survival as a child in hiding in Nazi-occupied Poland.

Nadel and her brothers were allowed passage to the United States and arrived in April 1947. She was adopted by a couple in Long Island and lived her high school years in the Los Angeles area.

Nadel didn’t discuss her Holocaust experience until her daughter-in-law, a teacher, convinced her to tell her story to an eighth-grade class. Since then, she has presented her story to classrooms and communities across the country.

Holocaust victims’ names will be read each day during Holocaust Remembrance Week from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Wyoming Union breezeway near the Copy and Print Center. Those interested in reading names can call Abi Cohen, president of UW Hillel, a Jewish student group, at (970) 331-1261 or email acohen4@uwyo.edu; or sign up online at https://goo.gl/dtdO90.

The process of dehumanization was fundamental to the Nazi destruction of European Jewry during the Holocaust, Cohen says.

“By reading aloud the names of victims during Holocaust Remembrance Week, we restore their humanity, honor their memory and recognize that the 6 million Jewish and 5 million other victims were individual men, women and children,” she says.

The UW events were selected to coincide with Kristallnacht, also referred to as “The Night of Broken Glass,” a persecution against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria Nov. 9-10, 1938.

During Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, UW Hillel and others will honor American veterans by reading the names of Jewish soldiers who fought during World War II.

All events are free and open to the public, and are sponsored by the Associated Students of UW and UW Hillel.
