UW Physical Plants Outlines Recommended Cold Weather Procedures

November 23, 2015

The University of Wyoming Physical Plant has issued recommendations to ensure safety and security in all buildings during lengthy closures or anticipated periods of extremely cold weather.

“Any time you will be gone from the office for an extended time, be sure to unplug any unused appliances and electronics, and make sure any important documents or electronics are off the floor,” says interim Physical Plant Director John Davis. “This will help reduce costs by protecting property, reducing unnecessary electrical use and making any emergency maintenance operations more efficient.”

Davis encourages building occupants to assist with the following measures:

-- Make sure all windows and doors are completely closed, with windows latched.

-- Check sinks and lavatories on exterior walls and open cabinet doors under sinks.

-- Report any unusually cold areas.

-- Report any wet ceiling tiles.

-- Report any doors or windows that you are unable to close and secure.

-- Watch for icy spots, and use extreme caution when walking and driving.

The Risk Management and Safety Office encourages everyone to read these property loss reduction tips.

Call the Physical Plant Service Desk at 766-6225 to report any situations or concerns.
