UW College of Business Class Partners for Union Wireless Consulting Project

December 17, 2015

A University of Wyoming College of Business advanced marketing class recently presented the results of a semester-long consulting project to cellular provider Union Wireless.

Taught by UW Assistant Professor of Marketing Elizabeth Minton, six student teams presented their work to Union Wireless Director of Marketing Terri Denhof and other company representatives. Union Wireless provided cash prizes, totaling $5,000, to the participating teams. The first-place team won $2,500.

“The students were expected to develop a new marketing campaign for Union Wireless to reach the millennial target market, with a specific focus on gaining the attention of UW students,” Minton says.

She says that students were required to meet with Union Wireless representatives at least twice throughout the fall semester, but many groups met more often. The students produced a final written report of recommendations, costs and a timeline of implementation in addition to their final presentation.

Minton believes that these real-world experiences are important for students.

“The students learned a lot about how to interact with a real-world client,” she adds. “Challenges are not as simple as textbooks often define. Clients can be difficult to get in touch with, can take several meetings to really understand what the client wants, and are constantly changing.”

Other classes that Minton has taught in the College of Business, such as “Marketing Management,” have completed similar projects for credit unions, nonprofits, senior care and local downtown businesses.

The first-place team, HGCS Consulting, consisted of Stephanie Carder, Seaman, Ohio; Gabriella Gualano, Honolulu, Hawaii; Alyssa Hagstrom, Evanston; and Kevin Shumway, Laramie.

Stork Consulting, the second-place team, consisted of Rahul Dhami, Cheyenne; Raj Patel, Laramie; Ricky Tabuchi, Rock Springs; and Meg Weldon, Frisco, Colo.

Members of Elevation Consulting, the third-place team, were Hailey Annable, Green River; Kasey Curtis, Sacramento, Calif.; Josie McDaniel, Cheyenne; and Ericka Patten, Littleton, Colo.

DLF Marketing, the fourth-place team, consisted of Gabe Davidson, Jackson; Stetson Fancher, Billings, Mont.; and Taimour Lotfy, Egypt.

Cowboy Consulting, the fifth-place team, featured Sarah Crank, Casper; Katie Wagaman, Sundance; and Danny Yurkoski, Broomfield, Colo.

On the sixth-place team, Gannett Consulting, were Summer Cepeda, Cheyenne; Dylan Reese, Pinedale; and Natalie White, Parker, Colo.
