Evanston Student Claims State Geographic Bee Championship

April 8, 2016

Degory Day, a seventh-grade student at Evanston Middle School, won the recent state Geographic Bee at Casper College.

He defeated 35 students from around the state and will represent Wyoming at the National Geographic Bee May 22-25 in Washington, D.C. The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership to National Geographic Society.

The Wyoming Geographic Alliance in the University of Wyoming Department of Geography sponsors the state competition.

Conrad Keevert, an eighth-grade student at Lander Middle School, placed second, and Preston Buehler, a sixth-grade student at Osmond Elementary School in Thane, placed third. To qualify for state competition, school winners took a written test that was scored by the National Geographic Society.

One of the championship-round questions was: In the newest Star Wars movie, “The Force Awakens,” desert scenes of the fictional planet of Jakku were filmed in a country that borders both Oman and Saudi Arabia. Name this country on the Persian Gulf. Both Day and Keevert correctly identified the United Arab Emirates.

Students rounding out the top 10 were:

Alpine -- Gabriel Daniel, fifth grade, Etna Elementary School.
Green River -- Christopher Taylor, seventh grade, Lincoln Middle School.
Laramie -- Christopher Blackburn, sixth grade, Snowy Range Academy; and Megan Eberle, sixth grade, St. Laurence Elementary School.
Lovell -- Madelyn Toner, eighth grade, Lovell Middle School.
Sheridan -- Will Pelisser, eighth grade, Big Horn Middle School.
Upton -- Aidan Coberly, sixth grade, Upton Middle School.
