University of Wyoming Calendar for April 11

These are among the activities scheduled April 11-17 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, April 11, 3:10 p.m. -- The Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Sue Brantley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at Penn State University. She will discuss “Lithology, Chemical Weathering Reaction Fronts and Runoff Paths Through Hills” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. Free.

Monday, April 11, 6 p.m. -- The UW College of Law hosts the Spence Law Firm Historical Trial Production in the College of Law large moot courtroom. The mock trial will put John Wilkes Booth on trial for the murder of President Abraham Lincoln. Free.

Monday, April 11, 7 p.m. -- The UW Latina/o Studies Film Series presents “The Head of Joaquin Murrieta: Lynching, Legends and Love in the Wild West” with a presentation by John Valadez, the film’s director/producer, in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center auditorium. Free.

Tuesday, April 12, 12:15 p.m. -- The Global and Area Studies Excellence Speaker Series presents Scott Worden, director of the Lessons Learned Program and special inspector general for Afghanistan Reconstruction. He will discuss “Reflections on U.S. Support for Reconstruction Initiatives in Post-Conflict Elections, Reconciliation and Rule of Law” in the Classroom Building, Room 105. Free.

Tuesday, April 12, 4:10 p.m. -- The President’s Speakers Series presents Barbara John, a professor in the UW Department of Geology and Geophysics. Her talk, “Mid-Ocean Ridges: One Last Frontier for Exploration on Planet Earth,” will be in the Berry Center auditorium. Free.

Wednesday, April 13, noon -- The Wellness Wednesday Speaker Series presents Aaron Courtney, assistant manager of financial services at UW. His talk, “Money Matters: Living Financially Well,” will be in the Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center classroom. Free. 

Wednesday, April 13, noon -- The Engineering Initiative Seminar Series presents Jeff Clune, UW assistant professor of computer science. His talk, “Deep Learning: What Do Deep Neural Networks Actually Learn?,” will be in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium, Room 201. Lunch provided. Free.

Wednesday, April 13, 2-5 p.m. -- The Center for Advising and Career Services will host the Just in Time Job Fair in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center. Student ID required. Free.

Wednesday, April 13, 5 p.m. -- UW student group Keepers of the Fire presents “Supaman,” also known as Christian Takes Gun Parrish, a Native American dancer and hip-hop artist. He will perform in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Free.

Wednesday, April 13, 6:30 p.m. -- Kasim Hafeez, a Muslim Zionist, will share his personal story of how he was almost radicalized to Islam. His talk will be in the College of Education auditorium. Free.

Wednesday, April 13, 8 p.m. -- The Student Activities Council will host a poetry slam for all UW students in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Those interested can register in the Campus Activities Center. Free.

Thursday, April 14, 12:15 p.m. -- The three-part Literature and the Environmental Imagination series with Susan Oliver, visiting fellow in English, concludes with a discussion of thinking forward in an Anthropocene epoch in the Arts and Sciences Building, Room 139. Free.

Thursday, April 14, 5 p.m. -- Entomologist Justin Schmidt will speak about his book, “The Sting of the Wild,” and discuss his research into developing the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. His talk will be in the Classroom Building, Room 222. Free.

Thursday, April 14, 6:30 p.m. -- The Department of Zoology and Physiology hosts the 33rd L. Floyd Clarke Memorial Lecture featuring Raymond Huey, professor emeritus at the University of Washington. He will discuss “Himalayan mountaineering: Factors influencing success and death rates” in the Classroom Building, Room 214. A reception is set at 6 p.m. in the Classroom Building, Room 215. Both events are free.

Thursday, April 14, 7 p.m. -- Studio WYO presents musical groups Comrades, Night Idea, Anterroir and Lowfaith in the Wyoming Union Gardens. Free.

Friday, April 15, noon -- The School of Energy Resources Speaker Series presents Andrew Price-Smith, associate professor of political science at Colorado College. His talk, “Oil, Illiberalism and War,” will be in the Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium, Room 201. Lunch provided. Free.

Friday, April 15, 9 p.m. -- Friday Night Fever presents magician Derek Hughes. The “America’s Got Talent” contestant will perform in the College of Education auditorium. Free to UW students.
