The University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra will perform its last concert of the season Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

“Beethoven 2nd” will feature a variety of compositions, including a Chinese overture and a well-known Beethoven symphony. A reception to honor the Symphony Association and the orchestra will follow the concert.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for seniors and $6 for students. For tickets and information, call (307) 766-6666, go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts, or visit the Performing Arts box office or the Wyoming Union information desk.

The concert will begin with Chinese composer Li Huanzhi’s “Spring Festival Overture.” The piece is a popular work for western orchestra in China.

Scott Turpen, UW professor of saxophone, will perform a “Saxophone Concerto” following the Chinese overture.

“Saxophone Concerto,” written by American composer John Adams, premiered in 2013 at Australia’s Sydney Opera House. Since its debut, orchestras across the world have performed the piece. This will be the first performance by a university ensemble.

The orchestra also will perform Beethoven’s renowned “Second Symphony.”

Turpen has performed worldwide, including Asia, South America and Europe. He also has played with many symphonies and distinguished artists in jazz and popular music.

Turpen, UW’s Jazz Studies director, has received multiple awards, including the Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Top 10 Teacher Award. He also received a Performing Arts Fellowship from the Wyoming Arts Council.

Now in his 27th year as UW Symphony Orchestra Music director, Michael Griffith will conduct the concert. He recently was named the third-prize winner for The American Prize-Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Award in Orchestral Programming.
