Activities ranging from glass recycling to a rummage swap are planned to celebrate Earth Day Friday, April 22, at the University of Wyoming.

Several UW student clubs and organizations have coordinated events to focus on environmental protection and bring awareness to ways to take care of natural resources for future generations.

The Sustainability Coalition, a UW group composed of recognized student organizations, faculty and staff dedicated to keeping the campus sustainable, will host the Earth Day Fair from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Simpson Plaza. The events are free and open to the public, and include the following:

-- Glass recycling, sponsored by the Wyoming Conservation Corps (WCC) and the Associated Students of UW.

-- Bike safety inspections and minor repairs, sponsored by Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE).

-- A rummage swap, sponsored by SLCE.

-- Live music performed by local band Dauphin and amplified by UW Extension’s solar-powered trailer.

-- Display of the WCC’s tiny house.

To celebrate Earth Day, the UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium will present a special show about the Earth at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Physical Sciences Building. The program will explore some of the factors that contributed to massive growth of life on the planet.

Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students. They can be purchased at the Department of Physics and Astronomy main office, located in Room 204 of the Physical Sciences Building, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m.-noon. For more information, call (307) 766-6150.

The first Earth Day was celebrated April 22, 1970, and, in 1990, the event expanded to a global celebration with more than 140 countries participating.
