UW Provost Search Continues; Public Forums Delayed

The search for a new provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Wyoming continues, but the timeline to bring finalists to campus has been delayed.

The 17-member search committee had hoped to identify finalists to come to campus for public forums late in the spring semester, but the process of selecting finalists will not be done in time to meet that objective. Public forums still will be held, but they will take place after the end of the spring semester.

“We would have liked to bring finalists to campus before the summer break, but that’s just not possible, in spite of the extremely hard work of the committee,” says Vice President for Research and Economic Development Bill Gern, who chairs the search committee in consultation with incoming President Laurie Nichols. “Still, we will do our best to make sure the campus community and others have an opportunity to hear from the finalists.”

The provost search process is similar to that used by the UW Board of Trustees in its selection of Nichols. The committee has sought input from campus constituencies and established desired qualifications and characteristics; is reviewing and interviewing applicants; and plans to pass along a list of finalists to the president, who will recommend a selection to the Board of Trustees.

As with the presidential search, the names of candidates will be confidential until the list of finalists is released.

The objective is to have a new provost/vice president for academic affairs in place in August, to succeed current Vice President David Jones, who will return to his position on the faculty of the College of Health Sciences. The provost/vice president for academic affairs is the second-ranking leadership position at the university.
