Wyoming Independent Music Initiative Has UW Flavor

The Wyoming Independent Music Initiative includes some University of Wyoming flavor, as the event is co-sponsored, in part, by the Wyoming Technology Business Center. One of the performing bands, J Shogren Shanghai’d, includes a UW professor.

The Wyoming Arts Council celebrates the Cowboy State’s independent musicians during the Wyoming Independent Music Initiative (WIMI), a showcase of nine Laramie bands Saturday, June 25, at the Gryphon Theatre, in Laramie. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the show starting at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Americana band J Shogren Shanghai’d is a Centennial-based duo playing a mix that includes folk, country, blues, jazz and rockabilly. Shogren, also known as Jason Shogren, is not only a musician, but a distinguished professor in the UW Department of Economics and Finance. For more information about J Shogren Shanghai’d or to listen to the band’s music, visit www.jshogren.com.

In addition, the showcase features Wynona, Libby Creek Original, Whiskey Slaps, Dauphin, Red Bush, Bondurant, Elk Tongue and Harpoon the Whale.

The WIMI, a pilot program of the Wyoming Arts Council, launched in early spring 2016 to strengthen the independent music scene in Wyoming.

Ten Laramie bands (one of which is unable to perform in the showcase) have participated in professional development activities, business counseling with the Wyoming Technology Business Center (WTBC), panels relevant to the artist and showcases with national industry leaders in music.

In addition to the WTBC, the event is co-sponsored by the Gryphon Theatre, BHP Imaging, Square State Film and Wyoming Public Media.
