UW Rodeo Team Solid on Second Day of CNFR

It was nothing fancy, just a solid second day at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) for the University of Wyoming’s rodeo teams.

Six of the seven Cowboys and Cowgirls who qualified for this week’s CNFR at the Casper Events Center competed in Tuesday’s slack round, and the six did just enough to not hurt themselves going into the second round of competition.

Jacob Smith, who the day earlier scored 77 points for second place in the first round of bull riding, was bucked off on his second ride. But the LaSalle, Colo., sophomore remains in contention for the short go.

“He rode his bull for about three or four seconds and was just overpowered,” UW Coach George Howard says.

No other competitor has recorded two qualified rides after nearly two full rounds of competition. The remaining riders complete round two during Tuesday morning’s slack competition. The UW rider’s 77-point first round has held up, leaving him no lower than fourth place during the second round.

Each competitor is guaranteed three rounds and, for Smith, being shackled with a no-score Tuesday is not the end of his short go bid, but still leaves the door open for a chance to move on. Bull riding is traditionally a difficult event, and not all 12 finalists qualify with three successful rides going into the championship round. But, it still takes at least two qualified rides.

Smith’s chances hinge on Friday night’s performance and what happens with the rest of the field this week. The roughstock events are different than the timed events, where a no-time usually means no chance of moving on to the short go.

The five remaining UW qualifiers were involved in timed events during Tuesday’s slack competition, and none hurt themselves, but their qualifying times were not good enough to crack the top 15.

Regional champion barrel racer Kailee Webb’s horse overran the first barrel, leaving the Isabel, S.D., sophomore to regroup. She still managed to stop the clock in 14.8 seconds, compared to the overall leader’s time of 13.9 seconds.

The Cowgirls, who were second in the region in the team standings this past season, qualified three in goat tying, and UW’s trio had a mixed bag.

Pavillion sophomore Josee Vogel had the best time among her teammates with a solid 7.3-second effort. Freshman Karlee Peterson, from Sturgis, S.D., was right behind at 7.5 seconds, but was slowed down when she bobbled her tie. Regional runner-up Amelia Anderson, of Forsythe, Mont., had a tough time on her dismount when she brushed up against her horse’s leg, causing her to stumble. She wound up with a 9.9-second mark.

UW cowboy Dillon Simonson, a Purdum, Neb., senior, had a solid effort, turning his steer in 7.1 seconds to claim 16th overall in the bulldogging event.

All four timed event competitors will compete in Tuesday’s final day of slack. No UW team member will compete during Tuesday’s first nightly performance.

Bareback rider Jaden Clark, of Wellfleet, Neb., will have his second ride during Tuesday’s slack, and will compete Wednesday night. He scored 72.5 points on his first ride Sunday to split the first round’s eighth spot.

Also competing Wednesday night is Vogel, while Simonson, Anderson and Peterson compete Thursday. Joining Smith for the Friday night performance will be Anderson and Webb.
