Campus Construction Update for July 31

These are among the construction activities scheduled July 31-Aug. 6 at the University of Wyoming:

Campuswide (Big Horn Roofing, Laramie; November 2016) -- Campus roof replacements will occur in the following order, weather permitting. Pharmacy roof is nearing completion. Additional areas for replacement: Animal Science, roofs over the meat lab and sales on the northwest side; RMMC, entry and front office area; Casper Family Practice, east-side addition; Arts and Sciences Building, northeast stairwell roof; Arena-Auditorium, gutters and apex repairs. Use caution around equipment and work crews’ activities.

Campuswide (UW Operations Paint Shop) -- Restriping and repairs to campus parking lots have begun and are expected to continue through the summer. Crews will repair and replace signs as well as restripe parking spaces and curbs at various locations throughout the campus. Please be aware of crews and equipment in the area, and observe posted street and parking closures.

Campuswide: Annual Steam Shutdown Project (UW Operations Shops and Arcon Inc., Laramie; August 2016) -- The campus steam system will be off for annual maintenance until the afternoon of Aug. 15. During that time, buildings will be without steam to produce heating and domestic hot water. Several buildings have backup domestic hot water generation. Buildings affected include those in the area between Ninth and 22nd streets, and Ivinson/King to Lewis and Harney streets. The STEM and Anthropology buildings also will be without steam. Installation of steam tunnel ventilation outlets will occur on the Lewis Street alcove roof and planter south of the Enzi STEM Facility. A contractor staging area will be at the west end of the lot between the Energy Innovation Center and the Geological Survey Building. A portable steam boiler trailer for Residence Life and Dining Services will remain on the north side of the Washakie Dining Center until Aug. 17. Please use caution when in this area.

Campuswide -- As irrigation pressures vary, watering in some areas may occur during the day.

UW Operations (Facilities Engineering/Facilities Management) reports the following activities for the week:

Corbett Pool (UW Operations Plumbing Shop) -- The swimming pool in the Corbett Building is scheduled to be closed until Aug. 22 for cleaning and maintenance. New LED lights are being installed over the pool area for energy efficiency. Please use caution around work crews and equipment.

19th and Harney Streets (Elk Ridge Builders, Laramie; August 2016) -- Installation of ADA ramps on the northwest corner of 19th Street is scheduled to begin. Access will be on the east side of the street. Please use caution near crews and equipment.

Animal Science Bus Stop (Elk Ridge Builders, Laramie; August 2016) -- The bus stop on north Willett Drive, adjacent to the Arena-Auditorium, will be closed through July 30 for replacement of concrete. Please use the bus stop near the A-A ticket office. Use caution near crews and equipment.

Lewis Street from 12th Street to 15th Street (Elk Ridge Builders, Laramie; August 2016) -- Replacement of concrete and asphalt, and the addition of a new approach at the intersection of 13th and Lewis streets will begin. Plumbing repairs to a drain line, adjacent to the Anthropology Building on the south side of Lewis Street, also is scheduled. Please use caution near crews and equipment. Please note that Lewis Street from 13th Street to 15th Street will be closed until late next week for heavy equipment operation.

Visual Arts Building (The Plumbing Company, Laramie; July 2016) -- Installation of irrigation pipe along 22nd Street continues toward Harney Street. West-side, on-street parking, adjacent to the work area, will be closed temporarily as work progresses northward. Please use caution near equipment in this area.

Service Building (UW Operations Shops; August 2016) -- Renovation is ongoing in the Fleet and Transit area to remodel current office spaces, construct new office spaces and a break room, and install lighting and HVAC upgrades. Fleet Services will operate Car Rental and Auto Services from the mobile trailer, located in the parking lot across 14th Street, during the remodeling. Please be cautious of crews and equipment in the area.

Jacoby Golf Course (Christensen Irrigation Co., Costa Mesa, Calif.; July 2016) -- Construction cleanup work continues. Improvements are expected to decrease water consumption, reduce system maintenance and enhance aesthetics. Please use caution near crews and equipment in this area.

American Heritage Center (The Plumbing Company, Laramie; July 2016) -- Clean up, grading and testing of a new pump house and tie-in piping between the American Heritage Center and the Visual Arts Building continue. Please use caution near crews and equipment in this area.

Engineering Building (Shepard Construction, Rawlins; August 2016) -- Classroom technology will be updated in the following classrooms: 1055, 2109, 3111, 3114, 4066, 1039, 1041, 1034, 1062, 1060, B105, 2070, 2064, 2082, 2104, 4023, 3102, 4054, 4072, 4059, 5030, 5038, 6085 and 6060. Please use caution around crews and equipment.

Physical Sciences Building (Arcon Inc., Laramie; August 2016) -- Construction will begin to repair water damage in the corridor that links the Classroom Building to the Physical Sciences Building. This corridor is next to the UW Planetarium main entry. Selective demolition, framing, drywall and painting will be performed on the south wall. One of the corridor entry doors will remain active throughout the project. Dust- and traffic-control barricades will be in place. Please be cautious around crews and equipment in the area.

Landmark Square Apartments (Highland Landscaping, Laramie; July 2016) -- Landscape improvements and new sprinkler system installation are substantially complete. Irrigation main, lateral line installation and pump station infrastructure are complete for all areas. Control clock power-up and programming are the only outstanding tasks. Traffic-control barricades will remain in place until final demobilization. Please be cautious around all remaining equipment.

Central Energy Plant (ITC Electrical Technologies, Casper; September 2016) -- New transformers, generators and switchgear are being installed at the UW Central Energy Plant. The landscape area to the south and west of the plant will be partitioned off for construction activities. There will be storage containers, vehicles and equipment on the adjacent roadway.

Education Building (Arcon Inc., Laramie; August 2016) -- Construction is ongoing for the Education Building window replacement project. Windows on the first and second floors of the south and east sides are in the process of being replaced. Windows on the ground and first floors on the north side also are in the process of being replaced. Replacement of these windows is expected to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Please be cautious of crews and equipment in the area.

Agriculture Building (Mastec, Denver, Colo.; August 2016) -- Installation of an AT&T Cellular site on the east roof of the building is underway. Please be cautious of work crews and equipment in the area.

Coe Library (SE Wyoming Insulation, Laramie; July 2016) -- Construction is ongoing in Room 206 to convert it into a presentation studio and an extra storage room. Existing lighting will be replaced with new LEDs. Please be cautious of work crews and equipment in the area.

Fieldhouse North (Marshall Contracting, Laramie; August 2016) -- Construction is underway to renovate the wrestling locker room. Staging will be located in the lower east hallway. Please be cautious of work crews and equipment in the area.

Biological Sciences Building (Marshall Contracting, Laramie; July 2016) -- Construction is ongoing in Room 302 to upgrade classroom finishes and technology. Please be cautious of work crews and equipment in the area.

Gibbon Street east of 15th Street (Equipment Services) -- Equipment Services will conduct maintenance activities on the gravel portion of Gibbon Street east of 15th Street. The culvert at the RMMC storage building will be upgraded. Please use caution around crews and equipment in the area.

Coe Library (Pinnacle Cabinets and Millwork, Cheyenne; August 2016) -- Remodeling of the Book & Bean retail space is scheduled to occur over the summer. The Book & Bean will be closed until further notice. Utility access is complete. Please use caution near crews and equipment in this area.

Agriculture Building (Summit Sealants Inc., Montrose, Colo.; November 2016) -- Building exterior surface repairs; window glazing joints/window perimeter re-sealing, control joint re-sealing; and a new elastomeric coating are being applied to the Agriculture Building addition. There will be two hanging stages and associated rigging on the north elevation of the Agriculture Building addition. Traffic control and falling debris protective infrastructure will be in place. Please be cautious around crews and equipment.  

American Heritage Center (Elk Ridge Builders, Laramie; August 2016) -- Installation of new ADA parking areas in the east and west end of the lot is scheduled. There also will be installation of a new underground drain line for roof drainage to the detention pond area. South access to the elevator will remain open at all times. Please use caution near crews and equipment in this area.

Agriculture North Lot (Summit Trucking and Housemoving, Laramie; July 2016) -- The gravel lot north of the Agriculture Building will be used by various contractors for staging purposes for construction and demolition nearby on campus. Please use caution in this area, and keep clear of vehicles and equipment.

Health Sciences Building (Marshall Contracting, Laramie; August 2016) -- Construction has begun to remodel Classroom 459 into an active-learning environment. The majority of the work will be contained within Classroom 459, but please be aware of equipment and crews near the stairs and elevator on the north side of the building.

Engineering Building Petroleum Wing -- New ceiling tiles are scheduled to be installed in the corridors in the Petroleum (west) wing of the Engineering Building over the next few weeks. Material and equipment will be stockpiled in the area. Please use caution near crews and equipment in this area.

Physical Sciences and Pharmacy Buildings (Colorado Hazard Control; UW Operations; August 2016) -- Major maintenance has been scheduled on the exhaust side of the laboratory AHUs in the Physical Sciences and Pharmacy buildings. The project will begin Monday, Aug. 8, with the north-side rooftop unit of Physical Sciences and end Friday, Aug. 12, with the rooftop unit in Pharmacy. No research can be conducted during this week in the research laboratories, because the exhaust system will be shut down, and no fume hoods will be functioning in the building. All fume hoods should be cleaned to prevent any off-gassing.

Arts and Sciences Building (Arcon Inc., Laramie; August 2016) -- Construction at the auditorium stage has begun. Crews placed a roll-off dumpster Monday, July 25, on the northwest corner of the building for construction purposes. Please be aware of crews and equipment in the area, and observe posted closures.

Geology Building (Laramie Mechanical and Heating Systems; August 2016) -- The cooling unit in Room 315 is being replaced. Please use caution around crews, equipment and tools.

Wyoming Family Practice, Casper (Pope Construction; August 2016) -- Concrete work is to be completed at the new chiller equipment pad. Please use caution around crews, equipment and tools.

High Bay Research Facility (UW Operations/Electrical Shop Tie In) -- There will be a shutdown Saturday, July 30, to tie in the High Bay building to the electrical grid. It is scheduled from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. and will affect the Visual Arts and Wyoming Technology Business Center buildings.

Ross Hall (Colorado Hazard Control, Denver; August 2016) -- Installation of new flooring will occur in Ross Hall, rooms 308 and 338 Aug. 1-8. Abatement of the floor will occur the first week of August. Please use caution around crews and equipment.

Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Commercial Flooring, Laramie; August 2016) -- Installation of new flooring will occur in the music corridor on the second and third levels of the Performing Arts Center Aug. 1-5. Riding equipment will be used to tear up existing carpet in this area, which may cause some loud noise. Please be cautious around crews and equipment.

Indoor Practice Facility (Arcon Inc., Laramie; August 2016) -- Construction will begin to repair passive solar wall plenums on the south side of the building. A man-lift will be utilized, and the sidewalk will be barricaded in the area of construction. Staging will be in the parking lot. Please be cautious around crews and equipment in the area.

Facilities Architecture reports the following activities for the week:

Hoyt Hall Renovation (General contractor Elk Ridge Builders & Design LLC, Laramie; July 22, 2016) -- All work on this project is now substantially complete. The general contractor and respective subcontractors are currently completing existing punch-list items that have been identified by the design team and the university. A final punch-list was completed by the design team Tuesday, July 26, to address any remaining incomplete/deficient items on the project. Interior room identification, restroom and ADA signage will be installed this week, along with A/V technology equipment in classrooms, library and seminar rooms. Emergency responder radio coverage testing for the building also is planned to take place either this week or next, and will complete requirements to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy from the City of Laramie. Relocation of existing furniture and equipment from Crane Hall is currently ongoing and will be complete by early August to allow academic department personnel to move in. Hoyt Hall will be ready for fall 2016 semester occupancy.

High Bay Research Facility (Haselden Wyoming Constructors, Laramie; scheduled completion spring 2017) -- Storm drain No. 1 -- that will extend from the site south to a detention pond at 19th Street and Willett -- is under construction. Work is complete in the drive lane south of Animal Science/Molecular Biology and will now continue south into the parking lot. The concrete slab for the north electrical room has been placed, allowing steel framing work to begin. Mechanical and electrical systems are complete on the second floor of the west wing, and are approximately 80 percent complete on the first floor. The concrete tilt-up panels in the north wing are receiving a skim-coat to create a smooth finish. Drywall, including lead-lined shielding, is being installed throughout the first floor. Taping and drywall finishing is nearing completion on the second floor. Painting is ongoing on the second floor. The grid system of the acoustic tile ceilings has started on the second floor of the west wing. Gypsum board ceilings are being installed in the north wing. The elevator installation is complete, with the exception of final connections and commissioning. Curtain wall framing is ongoing, with the current focus on the north elevation. Exterior stone masonry work continues on the north façade. Curb and gutter is 95 percent complete, and subgrade preparation is underway, which will allow the first lift of asphalt to be placed the week of Aug. 1. Landscaping work, including the irrigation system, is ongoing on all sides of the building in an effort to place the majority of the plant material before the off season.

Facilities Construction reports the following activities for the week:

War Memorial Stadium and UniWyo Sports Complex Video Board Project (Panasonic Enterprise Solutions, Newark, N.J.; August 2016) -- The project includes replacement of the War Memorial Stadium south scoreboard and sound system; installation of LED ribbon boards on stadium fascia; replacement of the UniWyo Sports Complex video board and scoreboards; and updates to associated timing, scoring and A/V systems in both facilities. Foundation and site work for the War Memorial Stadium board is complete, and structural steel erection is complete. Installation of the second-level concourse fascia for LED displays is complete. Placement of electrical cable in various facilities is complete. Metal wall panels, LEDs and static sign installation is in progress. Public access to War Memorial Stadium will remain open during the project, but be cautious of equipment, vehicles and construction crews in the area.

Engineering Education and Research Building Site Clearing/Demolition (General contractor Wyoming Earthmoving Corp., Rozet; August 2016) -- The general contractor has removed and disposed of the remaining three residential foundation structures along North 11th Street, including the existing foundation for the apartment building at the corner of 12th and Lewis streets. A large deposit of unsuitable gypsum-based soil within the future Engineering Education and Research Building area is currently being excavated and stockpiled on site. This unsuitable soil will be removed off site and will be replaced with new soil backfill from an acceptable source. A portion of the site utility work has been completed in Lewis Street, 11th Street and Bradley Street to remove and cap abandoned residential water service lines. The sanitary sewer line in the existing east/west alley will be removed and rerouted to the north in Bradley Street, once permitting is granted by the City of Laramie and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Please observe all temporary barricades, construction fencing, cautionary signs or other posted instructions around the site where work is taking place.

Wyoming State Vet Lab Renovations (BSL-3) (General Contractor Sampson Construction, Cheyenne; June 2017) -- Contractors are mobilizing trailers and Conex storage containers on the east and south sides. A temporary wall will be built in the corridor north of the existing BSL-3 area this week or next. Contractor access to the building will be on the east side.

The following projects are complete:

Campuswide (KONE Inc.; July 2016) -- Annual elevator testing is complete.

Education Annex (KONE Inc.; July 2016) -- Elevator repairs are complete.
