An innovative mix of music, readings, dance and visual art will be featured in the University of Wyoming Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series program Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The production is free and open to the public.

The program, “Buddha and the Breath: An artistic experience inspired by human anatomical exploration,” will feature UW Director of Choral Activities Nicole Lamartine, voice; mathematics Associate Lecturer Jeffrey Selden, guitar/banjo; theatre and dance Professor Margaret Wilson, dance; and Lisa Rickard, piano.

“Buddha and the Breath” is an innovative arts experience that includes music, poetry readings, prose writing, dance and visual art in response to inspiration from human anatomical explorations.

The performers will incorporate poetry readings and improvisations as well as music from classical genres through pop idioms.

Lamartine’s recent sabbatical inspired this unique presentation. Her sabbatical included an intensive six-day human dissection course taught by Gil Hedley, founder of Integral Anatomy Productions LLC and Somanautics Workshops Inc. The course explores anatomy in layers and relationships of those layers, as opposed to the discreet medical approach.

“I have always been fascinated by anatomy, and use a lot of body work and movement in my rehearsals and teaching of conducting and singing,” Lamartine says. “This class allowed me to discover this amazing instrument we use every day in creativity, function and strength.”
