UW Chamber Orchestra to Perform Germany Meets the U.S. Oct. 6

The University of Wyoming Department of Music will present a free public concert celebrating German and American culture, in conjunction with German Campus Week activities occurring at colleges and universities across the United States.

The UW Chamber Orchestra will perform “Germany Meets the U.S.” Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

The orchestra will perform with soloists Joan Griffing, from Eastern Mennonite University, violin; Diane Phoenix-Neal, James Madison University, viola; and UW music Associate Professor Beth Vanderborgh, cello. Vanderborgh directs the UW Chamber Orchestra. UW Department of Music students also will perform with the orchestra.

“Germany Meets the U.S.” features works by three German composers: Max Reger, Carl Phillip Stamitz and Carl Reinecke.

The concert will feature “A Musical Portrait of Mesa Verde National Park” by American music composer Gwyneth Walker; “Lyric Andante for String Orchestra” by Reger; “Sinfonia Concertante #11 in A for Violin, Viola, Cello and Orchestra” by Stamitz; and “Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 242” by Reinecke.

The event is sponsored, in part, by the "Germany Meets the U.S." Campus Week program, which is a grant-funded project with the German Embassy.
