UW Mortar Board Chapter Receives National Honor

The Cap and Gown chapter of Mortar Board at the University of Wyoming was among 34 collegiate chapters honored with the Silver Torch Award at the recent 2016 Mortar Board National Conference in Indianapolis, Ind.

The honor is given to chapters that make significant accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership and meaningful service to their institutions, in addition to fulfilling all national criteria and deadlines.

“The 2015-16 chapter participated in regional as well as local service, including The Big Event and reading to children at UW’s Early Care and Education Center, and organized events, including Top Prof, Tip of the Cap and Torchlight Laurels,” says Christine Wade, associate professor in the UW Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, and an adviser to the UW chapter.

The university’s chapter has received the Gold or Silver Torch Award almost every year, Wade adds.

Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities, and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.

Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown to 231 chartered collegiate chapters with more than a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation.

UW’s Cap and Gown chapter, chartered in 1933, has 50 members for the 2016-17 year.
