The University of Wyoming Department of Music presents “Mad Dances and Beyond: Contemporary Music for Saxophone and Piano” Friday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The event is free and open to the public.

The concert features Dan Goble, originally from Casper, on saxophone, and Russell Hirshfield, piano.

The duo will perform selections from their recording “Mad Dances: American Music for Saxophone and Piano,” which features the music of David Diamond, William Albright, David Del Tredici, Libby Larsen, Kevin Jay Isaacs and the Rocky Mountain premiere of “Hat City Sonata” by Flemish composer Piet Swerts.

Their UW performance is part of a Front Range tour that also will take the duo to the University of Denver, the University of Colorado, Metropolitan State University of Denver and Colorado State University (CSU).

Goble recently was named a distinguished alumnus of Casper College in his hometown of Casper. He is a D’Addario performing artist and currently serves as director of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at CSU in Fort Collins. Previously, he served as the dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., where he also served as chair of the Department of Music and coordinator of jazz studies.

Goble has performed with the New York Philharmonic for more than 16 years and also with the New York City Ballet, the American Symphony Orchestra, the Mariinsky Orchestra, the New York Saxophone Quartet and the Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet.

Internationally, Goble has toured extensively with the New York Philharmonic. He was a featured performer at the 2004 Thailand International Saxophone Conference in Bangkok. He also has performed recitals in Japan, China and Europe.

Hirshfield is professor of piano at Western Connecticut State University. He has served on the faculty of Northwestern State University in Louisiana and as a visiting professor at the State University of Campinas, Brazil.

He has presented master classes and conference lectures throughout the United States and abroad. In 2016, he will be a member of the Artist Faculty for International Piano Festivals in Bačka Palanka, Serbia, and in Bragança Paulista, Brazil.

Hirshfield was guest artist for the 2015 Piano Master Class Series at New York University and a member of the piano faculty for the 2013 Oxford University Piano Festival in England.
