UW Club Hockey Team Splits with Metro State

October 17, 2016

After falling to Metro State University, of Denver, 6-5 in overtime last Friday, the University of Wyoming club hockey team rebounded to down the Roadrunners 7-6 the following night, also in OT.

The Pokes jumped out to an early lead in the first period against the Roadrunners in the opener, only to see it dwindle away in the second and eventually find themselves behind. Dan Franks, from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, opened the scoring two minutes into the first period.

Later in the period, Gillette’s Tyler Johnson scored to put the Pokes up by two. UW would then see its lead cut in half a minute later. UW lost the lead when Metro State University (MSU) scored two and a half minutes into the second period.

Zachary Ference, from Bonnyville, Alberta, Canada, put the Pokes back on top once again with a goal eight minutes into the period, but the Pokes were still down by a goal going into the final frame. Collin Plitt, from Cheyenne, scored a late goal to tie the match, sending it into OT. But, three minutes into the extra period, MSU scored the game-winner.

In the second game the following night, UW scored three goals in just under two minutes to jump out to an early lead. Down early in the final period, Ryan Baer, from Fort Collins, Colo., buried the tying goal to push the team into overtime for the second straight night.

The Pokes struck quickly in OT on a shot from Franks to help UW improve its overall record to 2-4 on the season.

UW is idle this weekend, but has two games scheduled Friday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. against Montana State University, and also against the Bobcats at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. Both games will be at the Laramie Ice and Events Center.
