UW Cowgirls Take Team Title at CWC

The University of Wyoming Cowgirls’ late-season surge has the team in Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) contention.

The UW women needed only one event to put away the rest of the field in taking the Central Wyoming College (CWC) title, UW’s first of the season, last weekend in Riverton. The Cowgirls scored a whopping 220 points in goat tying to claim the CWC team title with 240 points.

Colorado State University had its best finish of the fall season with 170 points, and CRMR overall leader Gillette College was a distant third with 140 points, which tied the Pronghorns with the host CWC women. Casper College rounded out the top five clubs with 125 points.

The Cowgirls, who were second the previous weekend, used the CWC victory to inch closer to the top of the regional standings. Gillette College has scored 1,198.7 points through four fall rodeos, while the UW women have tallied 863.7 points -- 333 behind the front-running Pronghorns. Sheridan College is third with 614 points.

Just the top two clubs in both the women’s and men’s divisions send full teams to the College National Finals Rodeo next summer at the Casper Events Center. Gillette College and the UW women were the top two CRMR teams last year.

Wyoming native Casey Reimler led the Cowgirls’ charge by winning the overall goat tying average, notching the lowest time among her competitors. The Rozet freshman was only sixth after the opening round but recorded the fastest time in the short go to compile the overall best time of 15.7 seconds. Her two solid rounds, plus the overall best average time, accounted for 130 team points.

Another freshman in goat tying helped the Cowgirls dominate the weekend’s event. Cori Terry, of McKinnon, came through to split fourth place on the strength of a strong opening round when she tied for the best time. She added 90 more points in the event for the Cowgirls.

In just two weeks after being added to the four-member team, selected on a weekly basis by Coach George Howard, Terry and Reimler have charged up the overall goat tying individual standings. Terry is second in the region, while Reimler is fourth, closely trailing teammate Amelia Anderson, a senior from Forsyth, Mont.

Anderson scored the Cowgirls’ final 20 points when she and UW teammate Josee Vogel, a Pavillion junior, placed in team roping. They were sixth in the overall average.

Kailee Webb, who was not selected for last weekend’s four-member UW women’s team, won the CWC all-around title. The Isabel, S.D., junior was the barrel racing runner-up, and she added breakaway roping points.

The UW men had a solid outing, but the team’s 330 points left the Cowboys tied for sixth place with Casper College at CWC. Defending CRMR champion Chadron State College (CSC) won the weekend rodeo with 540 points, while the host Rustlers were second with 450. Eastern Wyoming College placed third with 440 points.

The Pokes remained sixth in the overall regional standings with 1,060 points, while Sheridan College remained on top with 1,825 points. CSC moved up the standings to second overall with 1,568 points, while third-place Gillette College has scored 1,410 points.

UW scored all its team points at CWC in two roughstock events.

Defending CRMR bull riding champion Jacob Smith returned to form in taking the CWC individual championship. The LaSalle, Colo., junior was the only rider to mark in two rounds of competition. He was third in the opening round and notched a 65-point ride in the short go to win the overall average, scoring 160 individual points.

Teammate Jess Davison, a Miles City, Mont., sophomore, secured fourth place points in the opening round.

And Wellfleet, Neb., senior Jaden Clark again was steady for the Pokes, finishing third in the bareback riding average to net the Cowboys 110 additional points.

The fall portion of the CRMR season comes to an end this weekend in Cheyenne when Laramie County Community College hosts the fifth rodeo.
