UW Faculty Recital Series Closes Oct. 9

The University of Wyoming Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series closes the fall semester with a free public performance Sunday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts.

Theresa Bogard, professor and UW Department of Music chair, will perform “Sonatas for Cello and Piano” on the piano with guest Barbara Thiem, assistant professor of cello at Colorado State University.

Thiem is no stranger to UW, where she served as music lecturer for 12 years.

The performance will feature two of the sonatas from the cello literature by Beethoven and Hindemith, and also the sonata for piano and cello by English composer Ethel Smyth.

Smyth (1858-1944), was one of the few women in her time to compose professionally and was an organist as well as a member of the women’s suffrage movement. Her style, while unique, has been likened to that of Johannes Brahms.
