Geography Awareness Week Events Nov. 14

A reception to celebrate the University of Wyoming Department of Geography’s 50th anniversary is part of Geography Awareness Week Nov. 14-18.

The event begins the week’s activities with a luncheon reception Monday, Nov. 14, from noon-1 p.m. in the UW College of Arts and Sciences lobby. Another highlight of the week is Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center’s (WyGISC) 20th anniversary open house Tuesday, Nov. 15, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Rooms 301/316 of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Geography Awareness Week events are organized by the Department of Geography, WyGISC and the Geography Club.

All events are free and open to the public. Here is the schedule:

Monday, Nov. 14, noon-1 p.m. -- UW Department of Geography 50th anniversary reception, College of Arts and Sciences lobby. Welcome remarks by Provost Kate Miller. Meet UW geography majors, minors, graduate students, faculty, alumni and friends of geography.

6 p.m. -- Panel discussion on “Implications of the Presidential Elections.” Panelists are UW professors Jean Garrison, global and area studies; Jim King, political science; and Jerry Webster, geography, Room 138 of the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center.

Tuesday, Nov. 15, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. -- WyGISC’s 20th anniversary open house, Rooms 301/316 of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

4-6 p.m. -- “My Favorite Map” event in the Wyoming Union West Ballroom. WyGISC and the Department of Geography sponsor an event for participants to share their favorite maps on stage. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 4:10-5 p.m. -- GIS Day “Explore the Power of Parks,” with Nell Conti, National Park Service intermountain region GIS coordinator, of Lakewood, Colo. She will discuss “The Next Generation of GIS in the National Park Service,” Berry Center auditorium.

6-8 p.m. -- Geography Bowl, Room 219 of the Classroom Building.

Thursday, Nov. 17, 5-7 p.m. -- Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Dan Wenk will discuss “100 Years of the National Park Service,” Berry Center auditorium.

Friday, Nov. 18, 2-3:30 p.m. -- Documentary film screening of “Before There Were Parks,” Room 302 of the Classroom Building.
