UW Club Hockey Team Takes Two of Three

After a tough last-minute goal that gave Brigham Young University (BYU) a close win, the University of Wyoming club hockey team rebounded with a pair of wins last weekend.

The Cowboys opened the home stand against BYU at the Laramie Ice and Event Center, striking first with a goal from Tyler Johnson, from Gillette, three minutes into the game. But, the Cougars scored twice in the period and, again, early in the second to go up by two goals.

In the second frame, Dan Franks, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, cut the deficit near the end of the period. The Pokes sent the game into overtime when Alec Macdougall, from Champion, Alberta, Canada, tied the game at the 17:46 mark of the final period. The rally would be short lived, however, when BYU scored less than two minutes into the extra period to win 4-3.

The Pokes’ sticks were hot from the get-go, when it seemed anything that was shot on net was going in between the pipes against Western State (Gunnison) Colorado University last Friday.

Johnson, Franks and Eric Tomasello, from Woolwich, Maine, all had multigoal games, with Tomasello netting a hat trick in the Pokes’ 13-3 romp over the Mountaineers.

Playing Western State again the following night, the Pokes jumped to an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first, with goals from Cambell Mackay, from Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada, and Roland Valadez, from Longmont, Colo.

The second period opened with a couple of goals from Ian Johnson, from Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Tomasello that helped UW build a 4-0 lead in the third period. The Cowboys had to outlast the onslaught of four goals from the Mountaineers, but the Pokes pushed through three more goals to take the game 7-4, improving to 7-5 on the season.

The Pokes play Friday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m. at the Laramie Ice and Event Center against California State-Northridge. UW will again face off against the Matadors the following night at 7 p.m., also in the event center.
