Wyoming Health Center Awarded Funding to Open Medical Clinic in Laramie

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a grant to the Educational Health Center of Wyoming (EHCW) to open a new medical clinic in Laramie.

The funding, in the form of a New Access Point (NAP) grant, will allow the EHCW to open the only Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Laramie. Once operational in April 2017, the new EHCW clinic will provide comprehensive health care services to Albany County residents, regardless of ability to pay.

The new clinic will join two other EHCW health centers in Cheyenne and Casper. The University of Wyoming Family Medicine Residency Programs serve as the largest safety net in the state and deliver full-spectrum family medicine to more than 12,000 people each year.

The EHCW is among 75 NAP award recipients in the nation.

“When we applied for this NAP grant, we knew there was a great need for increased access to health care services in Albany County,” says the center’s CEO, Dr. Kevin Murray. “This funding will give us the opportunity to respond to that need and reduce barriers to care that many in the area face every day.”

The new EHCW health center will focus on the delivery of comprehensive patient care services and function as an interprofessional teaching model for students of the UW College of Health Sciences.

During the grant’s three-year project period, the EHCW will receive more than $2.1 million to cover operational expenses such as provider salaries, medical equipment and supplies, and the cost of ancillary staff at the new clinic. The EHCW will receive $812,500 in the first year; in the second and third years, it will receive up to $650,000 per year.

In addition to direct federal funding, this FQHC designation will provide enhanced Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, and allow the EHCW to offer valuable medication discounts to patients through a 340B Drug Pricing Program Pharmacy.

“This new health center will bring great benefit to the Laramie community,” says EHCW Board Chair Joe Steiner, dean of UW’s College of Health Sciences. “We will use the experience and expertise of our health centers in Cheyenne and Casper to establish this clinic and expand our valuable services in a new area. We are eager to increase access to quality and affordable health care to the people of Albany County.”
