UW Changes Evening and Weekend Transit Services Today

February 27, 2017

Due to decreasing evening ridership and budget constraints, University of Wyoming Transit and Parking Services will change its evening and weekend transit services effective today.

The LaramieLink and Campus Commuter bus routes both will end service, starting today, at 6:30 p.m., currently the same time the Union and South Express routes end. Americans with Disabilities Act complementary paratransit service also will be discontinued at 6:30 p.m. Currently, LaramieLink operates until 8 p.m. and Campus Commuter and paratransit until 10:30 p.m.

To supplement the loss of fixed-route transit service in the evenings during the academic year, LaramieLink Dial-A-Ride will operate on weekdays starting at 6:30 p.m. and running until 6 a.m.

Although LaramieLink Dial-A-Ride is an on-call van service that operates anywhere on the UW campus -- including student housing, remote parking lots and other stops around Laramie such as downtown (First and Grand), Walmart, Ridley’s and the Laramie County Community College Albany County campus -- it does not provide door-to-door service to personal residences or locations that are not on the LaramieLink route. A ride can be requested by using the TransLoc Rider app in similar fashion to Uber and Lyft services. Rides also can be requested by calling dispatch at (307) 766-7433 (RIDE). LaramieLink Dial-A-Ride is wheelchair accessible upon request and will operate only during the academic year. The service will not operate during the summer or holiday breaks.

With LaramieLink Dial-A-Ride operating on weekdays, the intracampus Night Owl Express service will be discontinued as of today. LaramieLink Dial-A-Ride also will replace the Night Owl Express service on weekends, and will continue operating 24 hours a day on Saturdays and Sundays through the academic year.

“With the significant decrease in evening ridership we’ve been seeing over the last two years and the ongoing budget situation, we needed to make some changes quickly,” Transit and Parking Services Manager Paul Kunkel says. “We’re really excited about expanding our on-call service earlier in the evenings. With the decreased ridership we’ve been seeing on the fixed routes, it really makes sense to use smaller vehicles that are on call and can be used more efficiently.”

Updated transit schedules and information about the updated services will be available on the Transit and Parking Services website at www.uwyo.edu/tps. Customers may contact Transit and Parking Services at (307) 766-9800 or tps@uwyo.edu.
