University of Wyoming Calendar for April 3

These are among the activities scheduled April 3-9 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, April 3, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Paul Winberry, from the Department of Geological Sciences at Central Washington University. He will discuss “Earth’s Dynamic Ice Sheets: Insights from Seismology” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. Free.

Monday, April 3, 5:30 p.m. -- UW’s Center for Global Studies will host the Wyoming Goes Global Conference in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center. UW faculty members and students will highlight their international work through panel and poster presentations. A reception will follow. Free.

Tuesday, April 4, 1:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a lecture by Eminent Composer-in-Residence Libby Larsen in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Tuesday, April 4, 7 p.m. -- Planetarium show, “This Month’s Sky.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204.

Wednesday, April 5-Saturday, April 8 -- A variety of events will take place at UW venues during the 21st annual Shepard Symposium on Social Justice. Free.

Wednesday, April 5, noon -- The UW Art Museum will host “Lunchtime Conversations with Curators.” The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive. Free.

Wednesday, April 5, noon -- The UW Department of Anthropology presents guest lecturer Britt Starkovich. She will discuss “Dietary Expansion and Changes in Landscape Use from the Middle Paleolithic to Mesolithic in Southern Greece” in the Anthropology Building, Room 150. Free.

Wednesday, April 5, 5 p.m. -- Architectural Engineering Institute-UW and the UW Center for Global Studies present Michael Dixon, an architect specializing in historical preservation. Dixon will discuss his architectural Peace Corps work in Kosovo, Armenia and Ukraine in the Classroom Building, Room 214. Free.

Wednesday, April 5, 6 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents members of Flamenco Denver with UW music lecturer Steve Mullins in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Thursday, April 6, 6 p.m. -- The UW Department of Zoology and Physiology presents guest lecturer Neil Shubin, associate dean of the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago. Shubin will discuss his book, titled “Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body,” in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium. A reception is scheduled at 5 p.m. Free.

Thursday, April 6, 7 p.m. -- Studio WYO presents the Elk Tongue CD release show with musical guests The Raven and the Writing Desk, and Cephas in the Wyoming Union Gardens. Free.

Thursday, April 6, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a chamber music celebration concert. UW music faculty and students will perform music by Eminent Composer-in-Residence Libby Larsen in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Friday, April 7, 6:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. -- The UW Exercise is Medicine committee will sponsor a 15-hour walk in the Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center as part of World Health Day activities. To register for the walk, go to www.uwyo.edu/rec/wellness-center.

Friday, April 7, 8 a.m.-noon -- The UW Department of Political Science, the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the Social Justice Research Center, and the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources present Aparna Rajagopal-Durbin. She will discuss diversity, equity and inclusion in Half Acre, Room 115. This event is open to UW faculty, staff and administrative positions.

Friday, April 7, 2 p.m. -- British politician Catherine Ashton will discuss “A New World (Dis)Order” in the UW College of Education auditorium. Free.

Friday, April 7, 5 p.m. -- Gallery 234 will host a reception for the exhibition “The Journey: Take a Walk with Me” in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Friday, April 7, 6 p.m. -- A reception for Antonia Chiaramonte and Sydney Edwards, student artists, will be in the Visual Arts Building, THIS and THAT galleries. Free.

Friday, April 7, 7 p.m. -- Wyoming Public Radio presents Garrison Keillor, storyteller and radio personality, in the Arts and Sciences auditorium. Tickets cost $45 for the public. For tickets, go to www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Friday, April 7, 8 p.m. -- Planetarium show, “The Weird, Bizarre and Stranger Things of Space.” A free STAR Observatory tour (weather dependent) follows at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204.

Friday, April 7, 10 p.m. -- The 7220 Entertainment Late Night Events Committee, in conjunction with Campus Recreation and the Wellness Center, will host “Life’s a Beach” game night to recognize World Health Day in Half Acre. Free for UW students.

Saturday, April 8, 7 p.m. -- Mountain Women Belly Dance Club, a UW student organization, will host the third annual Belly Dance Showcase in the College of Education auditorium. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Sunday, April 9, 5 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents Harmonie Del Sur in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.

Sunday, April 9, 5 p.m. -- Friends of Nepal at UW will host a Nepali New Year celebration in the College of Education auditorium. A dinner follows in the Wyoming Union Ballroom.
