McCalla and The Last Revel to Perform Oct. 4 at UW

Classical and folk musician Leyla McCalla will perform at the University of Wyoming Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 8 p.m. in the lower level of the Wyoming Union.

The American folk trio band The Last Revel will open the show, sponsored by UW’s 7220 Entertainment program. The event is free and open to the public.

McCalla is a New York-born Haitian-American who lives in New Orleans. She is known for singing in French, Haitian Creole and English, while also playing the cello, tenor banjo and guitar. Her music has been influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, and American jazz and folk.

Her debut album, “Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes,” in 2013, was named Album of the Year by the London Sunday Times and Songlines magazine. The album also received recognition from the New York Times, Boston Globe and Offbeat magazine.

The Last Revel, from Minneapolis, Minn., is composed of Vincenzio Donatelle, Ryan Acker and Lee Henke. The group features acoustic guitar, upright bass, fiddle, banjo, harmonica, kick drum and vocal harmonies.

The trio blends a variety of genres, from folk and rockabilly to old-time string band and rock. This year, the group released its third album, “Hazard & Fate,” which shows a modern twist of American folk music.
