UW Wind Symphony Opens with Pops Concert Sept. 28

The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony opens the fall season with a “Pops Concert,” featuring popular music, Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Directed by music Professor Bob Belser, the Wind Symphony features UW’s premier wind and percussion musicians. Concert selections range from popular jazz music to Copland.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for seniors and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

“Our first concert of the 2017-18 season will feature a wide variety of music for everyone, including marches, a big band salute, music from the ‘Harry Potter’ film series and a finale tribute to David Maslanka, one of the most influential contemporary composers who lost his battle with cancer last month,” Belser says.

Featured pieces include: “Radetzky March,” by Johann Strauss; “Four Dances” from “West Side Story,” by Leonard Bernstein, in celebration of the 100th birthday of one of America’s musical geniuses; “Harry Potter Symphonic Suite,” by John Williams; “An Outdoor Overture,” by Aaron Copland, written as part of a 1930s campaign to create “American Music for American Youth”; a big band salute, arranged by John Wasson; and the finale, Maslanka’s Symphony No. 4, highlighting Maslanka’s most popular work.

For more information, call Belser at (307) 766-3877 or email belserrs@uwyo.edu.
