October 19, 2017

The Ben Markley Quartet, featuring New York City saxophonist Greg Osby, will perform a free public concert Sunday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall.

Markley, a UW Department of Music assistant professor and pianist, is the director of Jazz Studies. He also teaches applied jazz piano, improvisation and is the director of the UW Jazz Festival.

His quartet is composed of Osby; Evan Gregor, bass, from New York City; and drummer Dru Heller, originally from Spokane, Wash.

UW Jazz Studies and Jazz Advocates of Wyoming sponsor the performance.

Markley has performed with well-known jazz musicians Brian Lynch, Eddie Henderson, Terell Stafford, George Garzone and John Fedchock.

Markley's latest recording is the critically acclaimed jazz CD, “Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton.” Markley, along with guest trumpeter Stafford, celebrates one of the more influential and beloved figures in jazz, showcasing many of the late pianist and composer Walton's most revered tunes through new arrangements for big bands.
