Global Energy Markets on Domestic, Foreign Policy Topic of UW Discussion

A discussion on changing global energy markets and their implications for United States domestic and foreign policy is the subject of a free public talk Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the University of Wyoming.

Robert Ichord Jr., Atlantic Council Global Energy Center nonresident senior fellow, will discuss “Changing Global Energy Markets, U.S. Foreign Policy and Wyoming’s Position as an Energy Leader” at 6 p.m. in the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center auditorium. Refreshments will be available before the program.

The UW Center for Global Studies and School of Energy Resources, along with Sheridan College, sponsor the program. A similar program is scheduled Monday, Oct. 16, at Sheridan College.

Ichord has been at the forefront of U.S. international energy policy for more than 40 years, serving with the Department of Energy, U.S. Agency for International Development and the U. S. Department of State. He served as deputy assistant secretary in the State Department Bureau of Energy Resources from 2011 through early 2016, leading high-profile efforts related to energy security and energy transformation.

In his presentation, Ichord will discuss views on changing global energy markets and implications for U.S. domestic and foreign policy. He will address the radical shift in the U.S. position related to oil and gas development and exports, and its impact on energy geopolitics, domestic energy markets and Wyoming’s energy resources.

He recently completed a study on China and will discuss China’s expanding role in international energy issues. Energy diversification, the increasing penetration of renewable energy and the growing energy markets in the developing world will be discussed in the context of global efforts to address environment and climate issues, and as sustainable development and energy access for the poor.

Ichord’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on the current energy situation in the U.S. and Wyoming. Jean Garrison, UW Center for Global Studies director, will moderate the discussion.

Panelists are Kipp Coddington, UW Carbon Management Institute director; Rita Meyer, Rocky Mountain Power vice president for Wyoming; and Temple Stoellinger, co-director of UW’s Center for Law and Energy Resources in the Rockies, and Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources assistant professor.
