UW Social Justice Research Center Plans Events for 10th Anniversary

The University of Wyoming’s Social Justice Research Center (SJRC) will mark its 10th anniversary with a series of events Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Workshops, a scholars panel and keynote dinner -- all under the theme of “Change the Conversation, Change the Narrative” -- will focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. UW students, faculty and staff members are invited. All events take place in the Wyoming Union Ballroom.

A workshop for faculty, staff and administrators is scheduled from 8-11 a.m. to explore diversity, equity and inclusion and why such efforts are critical to the future of higher education.

Another workshop follows from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for current and past members of the SJRC board as well as other social justice organizers.

The scholars panel is scheduled from 3-4:30 p.m., with a moderated discussion and an interactive workshop featuring SJRC-funded scholars from the colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Education, and Arts and Sciences.

The day concludes with an awards dinner from 6-9 p.m. to recognize and reward the efforts of faculty, staff, students and community members to create and support an environment where diversity, equity and inclusion are valued. The keynote speaker is Francisco Rios, the SJRC’s founding director who is now dean of the Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University. His research interests include teachers of color, Latinos in education and preservice teacher education with a multicultural focus.

The SJRC is supported by a private endowment to advance UW’s scholarly contributions; bring visiting scholars and distinguished speakers to UW; and support other activities to create and disseminate knowledge and perspectives on social justice. Since its 2007 inception, the center has supported initiatives such as the annual Shepard Symposium on Social Justice and the students’ Good Mule Project.
