Symphonic Band Fall Concert Nov. 20 at UW

The University of Wyoming Symphonic Band will present a fall concert Monday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

The concert, directed by Bryan Raya, UW associate director of bands and athletic bands, will feature a variety of music.

Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

The concert will feature a piece, titled “Of Sailors and Whales,” by W. Francis McBeth, based on five scenes from Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.” The concert also will present Clifton Williams’ “Caccia and Chorale”; Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Sea Songs”; John Mackey’s “Sheltering Sky”; and “Chorale and Shaker Dance” by John Zdechlik.

“The program uses the sea motif to reflect on the human desire to pursue and attain an object or idea,” Raya says. “In contrast, the music also takes time to reflect on ourselves and what we do have as individuals and a society.”
