Being detail-oriented with an excellent work ethic are attributes given to Mike Eaton, the University of Wyoming Staff Employee of the Fourth Quarter.

Eaton, a maintenance/equipment/pesticide technician for Residence Life and Dining Services (RLDS), was given high praise by a nominator who says, “Mike is detail-oriented and has an excellent work ethic. He has gone above and beyond our expectations in trying to resolve difficult problems in one of our facilities.”

While dealing with a pest control issue in one of the residence halls, Eaton took ownership of the issue and was willing to flex his schedule to minimize interruption to the residents, a colleague says.

“Taking an active approach to the task at hand, he was able to maintain a good working relationship with students and minimize the time needed to resolve issues and interruptions to their studies,” the nominator says.

Eaton recently saw the need to research the best processes and methods to use for his line of work and, with the help of his team, implemented and improved the way issues are handled in various buildings.

“My direct supervisor is always willing to listen to the needs of my department and help find solutions. I would say he truly helps me be successful on a daily basis,” Eaton says. “We have a team effort. All the folks I work with at RLDS are on the field, and that’s who makes up the team, not just one or two people.”

When students move out of the residence halls for summer break, RLDS has a short amount of time to turn the buildings around for summer conferences.

“He, almost single-handedly, jumped in as quickly as he could, outlined new processes and tackled all the tasks that needed to be done,” a nominator says. “Some of these tasks required that someone come back during late hours of the night to check equipment or make adjustments. To make sure the work was successful, he was here at any hour -- day or night.”

Not only does Eaton work with and around students, but he also needs to work collaboratively with UW Operations and RLDS Maintenance to ensure building controls are off to ensure nothing is damaged in the process.

“Mike continues to push for better results and maintains a positive attitude. Problem-solving and working on difficult situations are not uncommon in our work environment,” another nominator says. “What makes a difference is how staff respond to creating and implementing solutions, especially when they are not easy.”

The nominator also comments on Eaton’s work ethic and how fortunate they are to have him.

“He has demonstrated the ideal approach: being positive despite challenges and setbacks, keeping stakeholders informed, thinking creatively, and being flexible and open to new (or old) ideas and solutions,” a nominator says. “He has been a role model, and the impact is huge for our department in that he has helped us improve our internal process. This helps us be more effective and provides students with better service and an improved college experience.”

Eaton, who has been employed at UW since August 2014, says he enjoys his role in helping others.

“I really enjoy the people I work for and the great team environment that RLDS offers,” Eaton says. “I also enjoy seeing residents, in both the halls and apartments, comfortable and happy. This way, they call the campus housing ‘home’ even if it’s only for a short time. I take pride in saying that what I do helps them be successful college students.”

Employee of the Quarter nominees can be any UW staff employees, and each must receive three nomination forms from three separate individuals. Nominations must be submitted to the Staff Senate office. The forms are on the web at www.uwyo.edu/staffsenate/employee-of-the-quarter.
