University of Wyoming Calendar for Feb. 26

These are among the activities scheduled Feb. 26-March 4 at the University of Wyoming:

Monday, Feb. 26, 3:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer Series presents Ken Dueker, a UW associate professor of geology and geophysics. He will discuss “Testing Thermal Hypothesis” in the S.H. Knight Geology Building, Room 216. A reception will follow in the UW Geological Museum. Free.

Tuesday, Feb. 27, 5:30 p.m. -- A documentary film-in-progress screening and feedback session will take place in the UW College of Business Building, Room 210. This event is sponsored by Slow Food in the Tetons, the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities, the UW College of Health Sciences and UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources. Space is limited. The event is free, but participants must RSVP by Monday, Feb. 26, at https://doc-in-progress.uw.eventbrite.com/. Dinner will be provided.

Tuesday, Feb. 27, 6:30 p.m. -- Science Café, an evening of science talks for the public, will be at O’Dwyers Public House, located at 1622 Grand Ave. in Laramie. UW research scientists Cameron Nordell, Jane Zelikova and Kevin Monteith will speak on the topic of winter ecology. UW’s Biodiversity Institute, the Ruckelshaus Institute, Wyoming EPSCoR and O’Dwyers Public House sponsor the event. Free.

Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m. -- Planetarium show, “ Wyoming Stargazing.” Tickets cost $3 for students and $4 for non-students, Physical Sciences Building basement. Advance tickets are available in the Physical Sciences Building, Room 204, or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/physics/ and clicking on “Planetarium Schedule.”

Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m. -- Adventurer and National Geographic writer Mark Jenkins will present “ Camels, Climbing and St. Catherine: An Expedition to Egypt” in the UW Arts and Sciences auditorium. His talk is part of UW’s Center for Global Studies spring 2018 “World to Wyoming Series.” Free.

Wednesday, Feb. 28, 8 p.m. -- Country and bluegrass musician Billy Strings will perform in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, March 1, 7 p.m. -- Studio WYO will host a comedy night in The Gardens, located in the lower level of the Wyoming Union. Free.

Thursday, March 1, 7:30 p.m. -- The UW Symphony Orchestra presents “Bach By Any Other Name” in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. Tickets cost $10 for the public; $7 for senior citizens; and $6 for students. Friday, March 2, noon -- Autumn Womack, an assistant professor at Princeton University, will present the UW Department of English’s Bruce Richardson Lecture in the Humanities in Coe Library, Room 506. Womack, who teaches African-American studies and English, will discuss “A Deplorable Spectacle: Performance, Photography and Anti-Lynching Activism.” Free.

Friday, March 2, 4:10 p.m. -- The UW Department of Anthropology Spring 2018 Seminar Series presents Lawrence Todd, a professor emeritus of anthropology at Colorado State University. He will discuss “Revisiting Lucy and Piet: Taphonomy of Hadar (Ethiopia) and Trinil (Java) Collections” in the Anthropology Building, Room 150. Free.

Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m. -- The UW Art Museum will host Family Saturday Workshop for families and individuals of all ages. Free.

Saturday, March 3, 2 p.m. -- The UW Department of Music presents a final concert for MANCAMP and Wyoming Women of Song, two choral festivals for young singers, in the Performing Arts concert hall. The concert will feature the UW Singing Statesmen, the UW Happy Jacks, Bel Canto Women’s Chorus and the festival participants. Free.

Sunday, March 4, 11 a.m. -- The Academy Best Picture Showcase will take place in the Washakie Shoshone Room, located in the lower level of Washakie Dining Center. The showcase will include “Lady Bird” at 11 a.m.; “The Shape of Water” at 1 p.m.; and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” at 3:30 p.m. A screening of the Academy Awards show will be at 6 p.m. The event is hosted by 7220 Entertainment’s Films Committee. Free.

Sunday, March 4, 3 p.m. -- As part of the UW Department of Music’s Faculty Recital Series, Nicole Riner, flute, and Chi-Chen Wu, piano, will present “Modern Classics” in the Performing Arts recital hall. Free.
