UW Faculty Recital Series Presents Modern Classics March 4

Nicole Riner and Chi-Chen Wu

The University of Wyoming Department of Music’s spring Faculty Recital Series continues with “Modern Classics” Sunday, March 4, at 3 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

UW Department of Music faculty members Nicole Riner, flute, and Chi-Chen Wu, piano, will perform Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata for Flute and Piano, as well as the world premiere of “Giantess,” by Carter Pann, a University of Colorado faculty composer.

“Prokofiev’s sonata is an epic work, almost symphonic in scope, which samples everything from military marches to American jazz,” Riner says.

The work was first performed in Moscow in 1943. Although it was originally considered to be nearly unplayable, Prokofiev’s piece has been checked and corrected against the original, and it is now considered to be one of the most important pieces in the flute repertoire, Riner says.

“Giantess,” a neo-Romantic work for flute and piano, was commissioned by Riner and a consortium of flutists from around the country.

“This premiere has been synchronized with at least six other performances the same weekend by other commissioners,” Riner says.

Riner will perform “On a Poem by Miho Nonaka,” a solo work for flute by American composer Shawn Okpebholo. Riner also will play “On the Pivot of an Abandoned Carousel,” a work for flute and electronics by Chinese-American composer Kay He.

“Both compositions, while vastly different in style, are fascinating explorations of the sonic range of the instrument and heavily influenced by literature,” Riner says.

For more information, call Riner at (307) 766-5242 or email nriner@uwyo.edu.
