SBDC Webinar to Help Startup Businesses Understand Equity Financing

Many startup businesses interested in angel or venture capital funding often do not understand exactly how this type of financing works.

A Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC) business webinar, titled “Equity Financing Options for High-Growth Businesses,” is scheduled online Thursday, April 5, from 2-3 p.m. Attendees can learn about different types of equity; how to decide whether equity is a good option for their business; and who can best benefit from an equity injection.

The SBDC is a partnership among the University of Wyoming, the Wyoming Business Council and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBDC focuses on educating small-business owners and potential owners on how to successfully start and operate small businesses. The SBDC’s main office is located at UW.

Charles Walsh, co-founder of Breakthrough 307 and CEO of the Casper Area Economic Development Alliance, will present the program. Breakthrough 307 is the first organized angel investor fund in Wyoming. Started by Walsh and Jared Stack in 2017, it raised $2.1 million earmarked for investment in high-growth, startup and early stage businesses. During the webinar, attendees will learn about the types of companies in which Breakthrough 307 is interested in and how to apply for funding.

Before moving to Wyoming, Walsh was the CEO of the Center of Innovation for Advance Data Management, Analysis and Visualization, a public-private partnership that involved 38 private IT companies, five universities, the state of Ohio and Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Its mission was to move leading-edge technologies into the marketplace through startups, business expansion and recruitment of new businesses.

Walsh also founded the first organized angel investment fund in Dayton, Ohio, and was one of the founding members of the first Ohio Tech Angel Fund. This family of angel funds is now in its fifth fund, with more than 300 participating angel investors who have invested more than $60 million in startup and early-stage businesses.

“So many businesses are interested in angel or venture capital financing, but most truly do not understand what is involved in that process,” says Cindy Beth Unger, business adviser for the Wyoming SBDC. “Our own Charles Walsh is an expert on the topic, so this should be a really good program.”

The webinar is $15, and attendees must register at www.wyomingsbdc.org to obtain the link. The program will be recorded and available to registered attendees who are unable to attend.

SBDC Network programs and services are available to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis. Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities, if requested at least two weeks in advance. For clients with limited English proficiency, language assistance services are available. For more information, call Peggy Baker at 800-348-5194.

The Wyoming SBDC Network is a business-advising group of the Wyoming SBDC, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center, Market Research Center and SBIR/STTR Initiative. The network’s mission is to help Wyoming entrepreneurs succeed. Advising and most market research activities are free of charge to Wyoming residents.

The SBDC is funded, in part, through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. SBA. Additional support is provided by the Wyoming Business Council and UW.
