The Bad Plus, famous for covering rock and pop tunes in a jazz style, will present its musical skill at the University of Wyoming Thursday, March 22.

The trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. UW Presents, formerly UW Cultural Programs, along with the UW Department of Music’s Jazz Studies, sponsor the event.

Tickets cost $17 for the public; $14 for faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $10 for students. Tickets are available at the Wyoming Union information desk and the Performing Arts box office, by calling (307) 766-6666, or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

“UW Presents is thrilled to bring jazz giants The Bad Plus, who have been winning critical hosannas and a legion of fans worldwide with their creativity, unique sound and flair for live performance since the late 20th century,” says Janelle Fletcher, UW Presents director.

Based in New York City, the trio has searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the possibilities of three musicians working in sync, according to the group’s biography.

“If this piano trio wants to play as loud as a rock band, well, let ‘em rip. These bad boys have the musicianship to back up their attitude,” according to The New Yorker Magazine review.

The band’s last four albums focused almost exclusively on original compositions, with the exception of its interpretation of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring.” The album “It’s Hard” marks the band’s return to the aspect of its roots that first made it famous -- the deconstruction of songs from the pop/rock and R&B worlds.

“Get tickets, settle in and enjoy an evening of great music and debate with your neighbors about whether one of their famous covers, ‘Every Breath You Take,’ was actually Sting or The Police,” Fletcher adds.

For more information, visit The Bad Plus’s website at www.thebadplus.com and view the video of the group covering Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”

Each year, UW Presents brings a variety of internationally known performers to campus, often at ticket prices much less than at larger venues. Each season usually features five performances during the fall semester and five more during the spring semester. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. in either the Performing Arts concert hall or the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.
