The University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra’s final concert Thursday, April 26, promises to be an event filled with large entertainment.

The concert, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall, includes a guest trio, four choirs, two conductors, a boy soprano and an anniversary celebration. UW Department of Music faculty member Nicole Lamartine will conduct the two choral works, and Michael Griffith will conduct the overture and the concerto.

Tickets for the concert cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Guest artists, the Lysander Piano Trio, will perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello. All UW choirs will join the orchestra for two choral works: Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” and Brahms’ “Nänie.” The concert will open with the overture to Bernstein’s “Candide.”

“Leonard Bernstein was born in 1918, so the whole musical world is celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth,” Griffith says.

“Chichester Psalms” is among Bernstein’s most important works, written in 1965 for Chichester Cathedral in England, Griffith says. He adds that the Beethoven piece is unique, a full concerto for piano trio -- piano, violin and cello -- and orchestra.

The Lysander Piano Trio, a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, has been praised by The Strad for its “incredible ensemble, passionate playing, articulate and imaginative ideas and wide palette of colours.” The trio won the Concert Artists Guild Competition and also received top honors at the 2010 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition; the 2011 Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition, winning the grand prize; and the 2011 J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition.

The trio is proactive in commissioning new works and creating programs that mix the music of today with well-loved masterworks.

“In addition to the massed choral forces, the psalms uses a boy soprano, who will be featured,” Griffith says. “Since the age of 2, Laramie’s Teddy Hart has been entertaining family and friends with song and theatrics. Now 11, Teddy enjoys performing in musicals at the UW Lab School and with Studio 253.”

Continuing this semester in the concert hall are “Tweet Seats.” Audience members who like to stay connected to social media are welcome -- silently -- to post their comments and share their experiences online. “Tweet Seats” are available only in the back two rows of the auditorium.
