UW Wind Symphony Presents Season Finale Concert April 21

The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony will present its season finale, “Winds of Change,” Saturday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets cost $10 for the public; $7 for senior citizens; and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Wyoming Union information desk and the Performing Arts box office, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

Conducted by UW Department of Music Professor Robert Belser, the UW Wind Symphony will present works in homage to Leonard Bernstein -- in celebration of the 100th year of his birth -- and also to David Maslanka, an American composer who died last year.

Bernstein, an American composer and conductor, became well known with his operetta, “Candide,” in 1956, followed by the musical “West Side Story” in 1957. His career in conducting included serving as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and later as musical director. Additionally, he traveled the world as a guest conductor.

Maslanka was virtually unknown early in his compositional career. In his “A Child’s Garden of Dreams,” based upon Carl Jung’s “Man and His Symbols,” the young wind band world targeted him as a composer of possibilities to increase the repertory of quality works for band. “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” first exposed Maslanka’s composition traits and styles, which would become the hallmarks of his later, monumental symphonies.

The concert also will feature work by two female composers: Kimberly Archer and Jocelyn Hagen. Archer’s “Fanfare Aureus” will open the concert, and Hagen’s “Hymn to St. Teresa” will premiere that night. The work was commissioned, in part, by UW’s chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity.

UW Wind Symphony musicians who will graduate this spring also will be recognized.
