A cultural event, “Circle of Dance,” a dynamic exhibition of dance and traditional
regalia from Native peoples across the northern plains, will be on display in conjunction
with next week’s Native Student Summer Institute at the University of Wyoming.
“Circle of Dance” will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, in the UW College of Education
auditorium. The event is open to the UW campus community and the public.
Through performances of indigenous instruments, and the vibrant dances of the Plains
people, education on the modern and expanding culture of Native people will be demonstrated,
says James Trosper, the UW director of both the Native American Education, Research
and Cultural Center and the High Plains American Indian Research Institute.
“Dancing brings with it a message of beauty,” he adds. “The hoop dance is one of the
most spectacular dances of the Plains tribes and will be a highlight of the performance.”
Trosper says the hoops serve as symbols of interdependence and unity.
