UW Team Ropers Season Comes to an End

In less than seven seconds, the season came to an abrupt end Tuesday night for University of Wyoming team ropers Justene Hirsig and Denton Shaw at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper.

Needing a good time on their third and final attempt for a chance to qualify for Saturday’s short go, the duo’s season ended when Shaw couldn’t loop the steer’s heels. Two misses around a 6.7-second time eliminated the UW pair from advancing.

After Hirsig, the header from Cheyenne, tied up the steer’s horns, Shaw, from Lusk, attempted to catch the heels, but he came up short as the loop hit all dirt.

“I thought we had to kind of let it all hang out there to try to win; that’s what we tried to do,” Shaw said. “We really didn’t draw the steer we wanted to do that on, and I just missed.”

Even though their season ended much sooner than they anticipated, the partners, who have been roping together since their high school days six years ago, wanted to seek the positives on a successful season.

The pair came on strong during the spring season to finish as the region’s third-best roping team.

“We had a great time, and we built some great memories that we’ll always remember, especially our friendship and our partnership,” Shaw said.

Hirsig said their first CNFR performance shouldn’t take away from their seasonlong effort.

“The whole thing was just to get here; this is just another rodeo,” she said. “I’m excited for next year to see what we can get done. It’s just fun to be here.”
